Backdrop and Fundamentals

ASX Limited (ASX) operates Australia’s primary stock exchange.

The company was listed in 1998 and is headquartered in Sydney, Australia.

Their main service offering is the provision of securities exchange services and the associated ancillary services.

ASX also innovatively provides market data solutions coupled with investor education courses.

I like the idea of the investor education courses as it looks at creating further income for the company by providing users with the knowledge to use their platform. The more people understand a product (investing), the more likely they will end up investing more.

  • ASX current share price = A$80.42
  • Market cap = $15.77 Billion
  • PE Ratio = 31.22
  • Dividend yield = 2.92% (So it is also a good dividend play= easy passive income).
  • Year-to-Date performance= +3.68

ASX Limited’s main shareholders include major corporations such as HSBC, JP Morgan, BNP Paribas and Citicorp. The largest shareholder is currently HSBC with a 23.71% shareholding.

Informed decisions

Like any stock exchange, they make most of their revenue through transactions. The greater the volume of trades, the better for the exchange company. As more and more retail investors start their investment journey, I believe stock exchanges will benefit from it.

With the launch of EasyEquities Australia, I expect that to also contribute to much greater volumes in trades in Australia over the long term. Having access to various markets has never been this easy!

Another easing fact is the fact that stock exchanges have now been around for decades and will continue for many more. This is a “safe” bet in my opinion.

This is not a high growth stock, so don’t expect your money to double overnight, but it could be a great diversification option. This a long-term play that will pay you yearly dividends, if you decide to invest.
